Simul on 100 boards.

For the 20/60 time control simul (which is 20 min + 1 min) average moves per game was around 40. So we can roughly estimate the total amount of time for the host, per game, as 20 min + 40 min = 1 hour, or 4,3 min per game. So host could play in blitz speed, having about 6,5 seconds per move.

For a 120/60 simul (120 min + 1 min), which is about the biggest time control that people will play, the total amount of time for the host, would be 120 min + 40 min = 160 min. And if it had 100 boards, that would be 1.6 min per game for the host. Even less because of the lag between board switching. So host would have to play in bullet speed, having around 2.4 seconds per move (1.6 x 60 / 40 = 2,4).

The estimate is not precise, because the number of moves per game varies, but it gives a clue that you would have to play about 4 times faster in the 2nd case above. But simuls have board switching lag, premoves don't work, and yuo probably need a couple of seconds to visually identify the board position after each switch. So I'm afraid that you would get flagged in many games, or your quality of play would suffer too much.

Another problem is to find 100 players willing to play a 120/60 time control simul. I thought about a possible solution for both problems, by using "simultanious simuls". What?? I'll explain.

You open a simul, and as soon as 25 players have joined, you start it. Before doing your first move, you open a new tab in your browser and start hosting a new simul. Then you keep playing the games of the first simul while new players gradually join the 2nd simul. Then, half hour latter, or maybe one hour latter, you quickly check the 2nd simul and accept players up to 25. If the number exceeds 25, announce for the remaining players that a 3rd simul will be opened immediately.

How does this solve the board switching lag problem? Thats simple. Each simul will use a tab of the browser and you can switch very quickly with Ctrl+Tab. Every time you make a move, you hit Ctrl+tab on the keyboard, moving to the next board of the next simul.

Since there is space between the time each simul starts, the host will have more overall time than the actual time of each individual simul. It will be more like a marathon, lasting for many hours. You'll be able to play in blitz speed instead of bullet speed and you'll get a much bigger number of total boards.

You can try this idea with two simuls with just 5 boards in each.
Vinvin,

Your idea is interesting and makes sense but hoster will probably become exhausted after about 4-6 hours of play.

CTORH,

Your point is correct. If the quality of play is the most important then your idea would work great.
But from another side it is a challenge for the hoster to do his best even under large time pressure and it makes more kind of a competition.
For example, analogy can be a Horde game, there is imbalance from the beginning position and this is what makes this chess variant so exciting.

EvilChess,

Thank you for your very informative and creative post and for all of the calculations!
Maybe your idea could work.

Thanks to Vinvin and CTORH also and to other players for their feedback.
Unfortunately I couldn't join this.

If you do this in Weekend maybe it could reach 100 players.
