I really like the 3d pieces and try to play from time to time but the lack of proper depth and the weird proportions of the pieces make it unplayable for me.

I don't indicate that we should have a real 3d board per say, but I think it really needs at least a hint of perspective, maybe something like a bit of depth/distance feeling. In the pictures below I tried to show what I meant by the board perspective. But again, I have no idea if it is feasible.

Personally I'd keep it exactly as it is. That way, every square is exactly the same size and shape.
