I wonder if this is even true. Maybe it's just an April Fools prank.

this is april fools joke, lichess source code is anyway available on github. in fact, they even give the link to it on lichess itself: lichess.org/source

i was wondering if there would be any joke this time, last time i remember they said everything on lichess would be 3d, and touch-to-move was being implemented

Lichess should learn from Microsoft and keep its code secret. That way it stays bug-free and invulnerable to hacks and trojans.
