About me

My name is Patrick. I'm 28 years old. I was born in Miami, Florida but am currently playing for the Panamanian Chess Federation. In chess, I hold a FIDE master title, 2321 rating as of january 2022, I have one IM norm and I'm currently pursuing the other two.

I am attempting to become a IM in the next two years and coaching is a way for me to fund this goal. So if you would like to receive a high quality coaching session and support my dream at the same time please reach out to me!

If you need a coach that will be 100% invested in your childs success in chess, I am the right person for the challenge.

Outside of chess I am also AD USAF., I'm an electrical and mechanical engineer with a background in robotics and also materials science. Currently studying for a MS in Computer Science.

Playing experience

I've been playing since I was 12 years old. I've played countless tournaments, including olympiads in Khanty Mansiysk (2010), Istanbul (2012) and Tromso (2014).

My best results have been a very nice win against GM Alexandr Fier from Brazil, a win against GM David Lariño from Spain and a draw against super GM Francisco Vallejo Pons.

Teaching experience

Official trainer for the Veraguas province in Panama. Training mostly young players, but I also work with high division players.

Other experiences

I used to be a teaching instructor for metallurgy, materials science, control systems and robotics in one of Panama's best universities, but I'm currently pursuing a chess related career.

Best skills

I'm usually able to sense someone's mood, emotions, level of comfort, etc. and react accordingly to maximize the teaching experience.

Teaching methodology

To play good moves, we must know what kind of plans and maneuvers we should be looking for in a position. My methodology consists of several aspects:

1. Positional and strategic training, so we can learn what to look for.

2. Calculation training with increasing levels of difficulty, so we can learn how to look for it.

3. Endgame training, because we should know whether we should go for a specific endgame or not.

4. Opening training (with special attention to the pawn structure) , because it's always nice to make it out the opening with a playable position. The repertoire is a personal choice of taste so I don't like to impose my own openings on my students. I can offer suggestions from time to time, but in our opening training sessions the student will tell me which opening they are interested in playing and we will review the main lines in a comprehensive way, sidelines available to play for a win and sidelines for solid play if a draw is an acceptable result for that game.
