Coronavirus Tournament

Once in a Lifetime Comeback from a Completely Dead Tournament Position

Lichess put on some special coronavirus tournaments in 2020, capitalising on the rise in popularity of internet chess during the diverse world pandemic lockdowns.

I played in this one:

where I was continually running about third or fourth in the bullet tournament for the first 53 or so minutes of the hour tournament. Then, after losing a game, I dropped to about about seventh position but was hoping to be pegged against a low-rated player in the remaining few minutes of the tournament and hopefully quickly win, in order to make up the deficit points to get me to first, but, as it happened, I was paired instead against one of the highest rated players in the 220-player tournament, FM HooCee. The game was going quite badly for me and by move 32 he had a queen, 2 bishops, a rook, some pawns and a king against my bishop, some pawns and my king. I was tempted to resign as my chances were virtually nil in this position against an FM, especially with him still having over 30 seconds left on his clock to win. However, a loss would probably have put me out of the running to win the tournament so I was forced to hope for one of the biggest flukes of all time. After the FM overlooked 5 opportunities to checkmate me in one move and several other chances, I managed to find a lucky checkmate.

After that I won my last 3 games and ended up winning the tournament by one point.
