Why do you play chess?

i like it because alot of games these days rely on luck or if u lose, there cud be an excuse or reason. Chess is different in the form of, if u lose, u only have urself to blame as a result of ur bad strategy, moves, or combinations.

Nice! I like to snort columbian coffee beans :D

Grinding them would ruin the experience :D
Why do I play Chess? I do because I exercise my brain (cerebral Cortex) just like I exercise my muscles during physical sport/game. Therefore playing chess keep me mentally fit and alert. When one play a long and hard game of chess the crown of one's head could get heated up because of the increase of blood flow. Try this on yourself during a long hard struggle of chess. Put the palm of your hand on the crown of your head to feel the heat there. The most important reasons are the frustration of a loss and the joy of a victory. If one keep on losing one might give up playing chess. If one keep on winning which is impossible one has to search for a stronger and stronger opponent until ...... ? There must be disappointment and fun together. If one lose a match, one hope to win the next one. That is what keep me playing. Imho. Thank you friends.
1. Because of the beauty of it.

2. Because of the challenge of it.

3. To improve my mind.

4. To sound smart
I enjoy trying to survive when I feel my opponent has an advantage. Sometimes I even win!
#1 Dionysus_god: WHY ARE WE HERE? lol. What a wonderful question. The Internet is a new and wonderful phenomena in the 21st century. At this present time, people of this world are connected visually, verbally and through Email at any one time. Any news good or bad in the world will be broadcasted and made known in a few seconds. We are connected very second of the day. Therefore through the Electronic Media, Chess players all over the world will be able to challenge each other. Now one number of opponent has increase like no other time. Not only we play chess, we socialize through the Forum. Now I spend as much time in the forum as playing the puzzles. Birds of a feather flocked together. That is Y I am here. Thank You friends.
It's a wonderful game that challenges us on an individual level. Lots to learn, and lots to do. It really gets my adrenaline flowing too..!

Also, I love the community :3
I forgot to mention that in addition to playing chess while having a woman around each arm while drinking Dos Equis (haha jk), it's the only sport I've ever been good at (and yes chess is a sport). I played volleyball in high school but I mostly rode the bench. Then in college I finally felt like I had something that I enjoyed, was good at and could kick butt. I was president of my college chess club, we went to tournaments and even won a class prize at the PanAm tourney (for college teams). I enjoyed hopping onto the university van and travelling around, meeting people, and having fun on the road playing chess. Chess made me feel like an athlete, which I was never able to do in any physical sports.
I play chess because I like to concentrate deeply, forgetting everything around. When I was younger it helped me to build up a solid self-esteem. I had left chess behind for over 10 years, now I play to distract myself from the problems my wife brings up (seriously, she has a severe mental disorder).

But it ends up that everyone plays for the pleasure of dopamine release in the brain, a neurotransmitter which plays a major role in reward-motivated behavior.

Playing chess moderately does make our brain healthier more than any other "brain fitness" site. Yet some can play for long enough to be driven crazy.

PS: #19 and #20, no you never play the same ENTIRE game twice because either of the players will always remember the previous game and, at some moment, try a better move.
