10 000!

Can`t believe that the last server that got 10,000 chess players logged in was Yahoo Chess, more than 10 years ago. Maybe the worse ever. No automatic sides change in two games in a row against the same opponent: If you played with the white pieces against someone and wanted to play a rematch with the black pieces, you had to "stand up" and "sit down" again in the opposite side of the board, but by the time you did that your opponent would think that you didn´t want to play anymore and would leave the board. At that time I think FICS was by far the best.
Chess.com routinely has >20,000 players online. But it is stagnating because people are realising lichess is way better.
chess.com is in panic mode and even "borrowing/stealing" features left and right and updating their design to keep users. In many ways lichess made chesscom forced to improve. But I think lichess will grow and steal users from chesscom.
They have certainly improved, though they're still a long way behind the style/simplicity of Lichess, and probably always will be.

But no matter how much they improve, I think the absence of ads here is a real chess.com killer.

Lichess might grow further by expanding the community features. Kibitzing on Lichess TV is still not a feature, though this might be deliberate as live chat often devolves into iniquity.

Also, pro games are not streamed, though I'm not sure how it would be implemented here. This would probably kill off a bunch of other for-profit sites.
chess.com still has a really good chess theory base, but you have to pay for it, if lichess could get more lessons than the video library, new chess players wouldnt have to elarn chess on another site like chessacademy.org or something...
The main reason that lichess is growing so quickly and chesscom is failing is because everything here is absolutely free, chesscom has to be paid for.
