Interestingly it wasn't always the white pieces that moved first, in fact during the Anderssen-Kieseritzky immortal game Anderssen had the black pieces yet had the first move, it's just been switched in modern notations of the game.

So to conclude this mini essay, move advantage is 'technically' more accurate, but i think everyone understood what he really meant anyway.

This all reminds me of a time when a stranger saw me playing chess in a pub in England and asked if he could play me, I said sure, and put a white pawn in one hand, a black pawn in the other, and did the usual thing of shuffling them behind my back and then asked him to pick a hand. Anyway he chose the hand with the black pawn, to which I replied "so you're black then", which btw was probably not the best thing to say, as he happened to be one of the biggest black men I'd ever sat opposite to. I only clocked the double entendre just after it left my lips, safe to say I turned very red.

Conclusion- it's not politically incorrect to say 'the black pieces', but I would avoid saying it if your opponent is the physical equivalent of Mike Tyson.

actually, Okgo your guess is right. I had written "especially since you're black - good job" but despite the (obvious) context - i.e. there would have been nothing wrong with saying that - I decided that it sounded too patronizing to me (personally), i.e. wow, way to tie the chess engine, all the more impressive considering you're black, and although it was in no way necessary to change it, I also thought nobody would deduce that it was a correction rather than my first phrasing, so I thought the correction was 'free' (removes ambiguity, since it refers to what I mean.)
I didn't think to correct to "played with the black pieces", which I guess is what most people would have written and would have been just as good. I just thought I'd be more specific (move disadvantage, which is very real.). so yes, you picked up on a hypercorrection, but not one that I advocate or anything, I just thought I would do it for free. It's not wrong to use my original phrasing in any way and I didn't realize it sounded like I was going out of my way to avoid it.
