Berserk rule option

#7 Yes Truedanger, I think it would be a nice optional extra for the tournament organiser to help level the playing field of a tournament.
Maybe at the end everybody will have the same rating ?

:)
I like the idea too.

But 1:30 against 30 seconds seems quite extreme. I bet the 2000 in your given example would have better chances. I would go for something less drastic.

For example an up to 20 seconds increase/decrease till a 600p difference. So a 2200 would have 40 seconds against a 1600 with 80 seconds.

Better players should still have better chances, otherwise it might be frustrating for them.

And of course these tournaments should be unrated due to the handicap.
I understand your explanation of OPTIONAL handicap rules for tournament organiser. But I really think that this sentence "I think such 2500s are really like disgusting gutless vultures" is just wrong. Despite disrespect in here, some people just want to have fun, maybe find a nice checkmate and not risk that 2500 rating, as berserking 2000 player for 2500 is definetely not a piece of cake. As your rating is exacly 500 points below John Bartholomew now, and I doubt he would stand much chances againts you berserking.
Sibro #14 - It was an abstract comment at my annoyance of someone in particular (Not anyone currently in the top 10 of bullet!) that seemed to want to win all the custom tournaments i have created. He has since also started beserking though and getting into the spirit of things more.

I think the concept of an optional handicap system for custom tournaments still might be a good enhancement of the site, and I hope we can direct all our resources at this particular focal point of the thread as we evolve any discussions here.

Best wishes
K
In response to #13 - yes I think the halving of time is too harsh. However on your other point - I am not entirely sure that such tournaments have to be unrated - as if they are an option for someone to join - it would add to the stakes of everyone to do their best and add to the fun by making it more serious with these stakes.

Online ratings are really for me a bit of fun and can fluctate heavily due to the enormous number of games played even in a day compared to say a year of OTB. I think therefore rated odds tournaments would be very popular - maybe more so than non rated and encourage greater participation and interest from the lower rateds wanting to get "rating upsets". As a higher rated player myself I would relish the option of giving time odds and have done this at other sites in the past for time handicap style tournaments - which have been rated.

Cheers, K
True, maybe its possible to make a seperate rating or calculate it in a different way. For example a 2000 beating a 1500 doesnt get 1 but 3 points. And the 1500 beating the 2000 is getting 9 instead of 20 points (I dont know how its calculated this is only an example to demonstrate what I mean).
#6 This idea sounds most entertaining (to me, anyway)! I agree that online ratings can heavily fluctuate, and in my opinion the main purpose of online ratings is to help players find good opponents.

For those objecting about possible sandbagging (for the purpose of trying to win the tournament?), one solution would be to compute time odds based on the player's tournament score (instead of computing it based on rating). OTB I've seen players play matches where between games, the winner decreases time on his clock by 1 minute. Actually, I wonder if something similar could work as a tournament idea...
